To graduate with Latin honors may be a realistic goal for many students to achieve, but to be recognized by the school as one of its cream of the crop—from a list of thousands of graduates—must be a feather in your cap. How much more if you’re chosen as one of the country’s best?

Allow me to congratulate my niece Jenny Ann Allera Pimentel on bringing honor to our family in Malabuyoc by graduating as the very first Cum Laude (0.02 shy of Magna Cum Laude), with a degree in International Relations and Foreign Service from the University of San Carlos. She was given The Outstanding Graduate trophy during USC’s 30th Excellence Awards, a recognition given only to the university’s 12 best graduates—after an impressive finish from her department’s nomination, the screenings, essay writing, interviews, reviews of her countless contributions to the institution’s excellence, and thorough deliberation by the Office of Students Affairs.

What’s astounding, to say the least, is that Jenny Ann was chosen as one of the Ten Most Outstanding Political Science Students of the Philippines (take note: of the entire country) and was also awarded as Most Eloquent Speaker during the Political Science Students’ Association National Convention in Vigan, Ilocos Sur last February 7–10, 2013.

A consistent dean’s lister from first year through fourth year, Jenny Ann was ultra-active in USC’s academic and extra-curricular activities, for instance, hosting her department’s and various school programs. You may also have caught her hosting entertainment shows at such department stores as Metro Colon, Metro Ayala, Metro Mandaue, as well as at corporate events, wedding receptions, birthday parties, pageants, and so on.

Jenny Ann graduated valedictorian from Montaneza National High School in Malabuyoc and was consequently voted as president of the Valedictorians Association of Cebu, during an assembly of all valedictorians from different secondary schools at the Cebu Provincial Capitol.

Congratulations also to my nephew Airon Jake Pimentel, Jenny Ann’s brother, on his first honors award at the Montaneza National High School recognition day. Kudos to their Mama Alma Pimentel and Papa James Pimentel for raising their kids well.
