That Cebu is home to the country’s most beautiful women is an open book. Barely two months after Kris Tiffany Janson won the Binibining Pilipinas Intercontinental 2014 crown, another Cebuana Jamie Herrell was crowned last night as Miss Philippines Earth 2014. Both beauties from the Queen City of the South are bound to compete globally later this year, and based on their proven and tested performances at the national level, they’re highly expected to bring home the ultimate crowns from their respective pageants overseas: Miss Intercontinental 2014 and Miss Earth 2014.

Jamie and Kris are good friends and proud protegees of the Kagandahang Flores beauty camp. The former was among the uber supportive spectators of the latter during the Binibining Pilipinas 2014 Coronation Night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City. Here in the photo, we’re headed to the victory party for the Kagandahang Flores entrants who reaped most of the crowns, together with another Cebuana beauty queen Karla Henry (Miss Earth 2008, front, driving), who hosted last night’s Miss Philippines Earth 2014 pageant at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

Congratulations to Jamie Herrell’s Cebu handler, Marlon Wafer of Wafer Models Philippines and, of course, to Rodgil Flores on their mentee’s well-deserved victory.

An earthshaking congratulations to Jamie Herrell on winning the hearts, the trust, the confidence, and the decision of the board of judges to choose her as the perfect Ambassador for Mother Nature.

Confessions of a Gay Friend

It’s overwhelming how the two priests in whom I’ve confided my current issues never made me feel judged in their answers to my questions.

During last Holy Week’s confession in Malabuyoc, the priest—in reference to my love for and broken heart by someone of the same sex—asked, “Are you aware that both of you will not end up getting married as husband and wife?”

“Of course, I am. And it doesn‘t bother me at all,” I acknowledged the fact that same-sex marriage is not legal in our country, citing my personal opinion that I, too, am not the least bit fond of it.

His next question stunned me. The priest said, “Have you made out with him?”

“No. I haven’t, and honestly, I can live even without it, because my feeling for him is pure love. Nothing carnal,” I told him pointblank, adding that even to God I’ve already admitted that it would not be a priority if ever He answered my prayer, although, of course, human as we are, we’re entitled to our own physiological desires—especially that this guy in question is hot.

In my confession today at the St. Therese of the Child Jesus Parish Church in Lahug, the priest simply said that the guy might have his reasons for calling it quits, reminding me to embrace the fact that, in this world, only ‘change’ is constant. Yet he said something that touched me and caused me to cry rivers in front of him: “You also have to keep your heart open to the possibility that he may come back to you.”

Praise the Lord! And God bless these unself-righteous people, as well as those who have shown compassion towards—and not cast judgment upon—their friend who, during his most despondent days, needs the former more than the latter. Without mincing matters, friendship is not just about giving a dose of reality: It’s about having a certain amount of sensitivity.

Khriesha, Roca, Jersey: Behold the Reigning Miss Teen Gawahon Beauties

Tags

One year ago, three equally meritorious young girls were crowned as Miss Teen Gawahon – UniverseMiss Teen Gawahon – World, and Miss Teen Gawahon – International. They were Khriesha Allosada Mendoza (center), Roca Lanojan Subrevilla (right), and Jersey Anne Allera Salazar (left). Last April 28, these lovely teens bade farewell as they took their final walk at the Search for Miss Teen Gawahon 2014 in Poblacion Dos, Malabuyoc, Cebu—where I sat as chairman of the board of judges. I will post the photos of the new winners tomorrow.

In the meantime, let’s congratulate our outgoing beauty queens on a meaningful reign which they so successfully lived with much grace, more growth, and most glory.

Who would’ve thought that one of them had won two other prestigious titles in the city prior to her last night as Miss Teen Gawahon – Universe 2013? Khriesha was crowned as Miss Teen Valentine 2014 in February at Metro Colon. Then she was one of Cebu’s chosen qualifiers for the Miss Teen Earth Philippines 2014 national preliminaries held recently at the Manila Ocean Park, but then, due to lack of travel funds, our team couldn’t make it there. Such a heartbreak but all right, though, for I was able to make use of my approved vacation leave for those days in Malabuyoc instead, cuddling my precious joys: Sebastian, Kenshi, and Savannah.

Once again, congratulations to Khriesha, Roca and Jersey, from your Manoy Ariel! May God bless your road to the world of pageantry!

Miss Teen Philippines 2014 Central Visayas: Intro to Question and Answer

(There was only one beauty queen I could think of when I wrote this spiel. Guess who? It’s Lara Dutta: Miss Universe 2000 from India. She’s the most eloquent beauty queen I’ve ever seen and heard talking—since she delivered her answers with unmatched aplomb to all the tough questions asked at the Miss Universe 2000 pageant held in Cyprus. Sometimes I wonder: “If only I could suck her brains. . . .”)

Global Readiness Through Education“—that’s the theme of Miss Teen Philippines. Our winner will serve as an active member of the Philippine Delegation to the Southeast Asian Youth Program as well as the National Youth Parliament. And because she believes that “education is the key to success” and with her title that totally translates to an inspiration to the youth of today, what better way to hit upon that perfect girl who will embody our no-nonsense advocacy for education than letting them speak their minds out? Candidates # 1 through 9 may remain onstage, while the rest may now hold their tongues in the backstage.

Miss Teen Philippines 2014 Central Visayas: Judging Criteria, Judges

Tags

(I wrote the first paragraph as if I was a candidate being asked to define what a Miss Teen Philippines should be.)

As best as she can be, an ideal Miss Teen Philippines is synonymous to an outstanding youth in the community. She should be inclined to impact a lasting impression on her title not only as a beauty queen with that glittering crown on her head, but more importantly and yet more appropriately, as an advocate for education, an instrument of peace and goodwill, a symbol of hope, and so on.

So, tonight, each of the contestants will be judged according to our meticulous judging criteria:

Intelligence (based on the judges’ personal interview with the candidates): 50%
Poise & Confidence: 30%
Physical Appearance: 20%,
Total: 100%

And to make sure that we choose the best of our equally vibrant beauties with brains, we have invited the most capable people to help us in determining who the winners will be.

Judges:

DR. RAMIR B. UYTICO (Educator)
MR. JING MONIS (Member of the Miss Teen Philippines Advisory Council, one of the country’s premiere hair stylists, celebrity salon owner, hair care expert and consultant)
MR. ROBBIE PINERA (Member of the Miss Teen Philippines Advisory Council, makeup stylist extraordinaire, creative director, entrepreneur)
MR. LANCE GUIANG (SUN Postpaid Marketing representative)
MR. MARC RAMOS (Director of Operations for Miss Teen Philippines 2004–2007)

(I was inspired upon writing for this particular segment because, to me, it felt like being one of the Miss Universe candidates ready to make much of a mark in front of the judges.)

Welcome to the SM City Cebu Event Centre and the search for the most exceptional young Filipina, Miss Teen Philippines 2014! I am extremely honored to be standing right here and right now, as I welcome you all to the Miss Teen Philippines Central Visayas 2014 Regional Finals. Today, we will all be treated to an hour or two of the beauty, the intelligence, and the advocacy of the most outstanding teenagers coming from all corners of Region 7. At the end of the night, five standouts from a total of more than fifty applicants during the March 15 regional screening will walk away happier, prouder, and more excited—for they will be flown to Manila to compete once again, together with all winners from the different regions of the country. I am talking about the Miss Teen Philippines 2014 National Finals to be held on May 31 at the Philippine International Convention Center. Girls, we’ll see you again later. In the meantime, let’s take a closer look at and get to know more about the Search for Miss Teen Philippines.

Miss Teen Philippines 2014 Central Visayas: The Host and the Scriptwriter

Tags

Let me share in my next posts an excerpt of the 12-page script I wrote for last Sunday’s Miss Teen Philippines 2014 Central Visayas Regional Finals. I’d be a hypocrite if I didn’t say that I took much pride in having been the scriptwriter of this prestigious pageant, even before it was put on a hiatus in 2007. Thanks to the host (my niece Jenny Ann Allera Pimentel) and the voice-over (my friend Chassy Cortes) for doing a fantastic job in fleshing out each and every word that I worked so hard for. Special thanks to my gifted five-month-old baby girl, Savannah, for keeping me company and behaving like an editor-cum-consultant on my left lap as I wrote my first draft of the script on my right. Thank you, God, for this gift!
